By Airways: The nearest airport is at Trichy, 65 kms away and the next at Madurai which is 200 Kms by road. If you come from other parts of the country you can land at the Chennai airport. Thanjavur is around 350 kms South of Chennai by road. The Cochin-Trichy air route is another option.
By Railways: Thanjavur is directly connected by rail to Trichy, Madurai, Chennai, Chidambaram and Nagore.
By Roadways: Thanjavur is well connected with all the major towns in Tamilnadu. There are regular bus services to Chidambaram , Kanyakumari, Kumbakonam , Madras , Madurai, Pudukkotai, Rameshwaram , Tiruchirapalli . It is also connected to Cochin, Ernakulam and Trivandrum in Kerala and Bangalore in Karnataka.
Thanjavur attained prominence under the Chola rulers who were paramount in South India during 9th to 12th centuries.
