The nearest airport is at Karipur, Kozhikode (Calicut) which is about 93 km south. The Kannur is an important railhead of the Southern Railways and it is major railway station on Shornur-Mangalore line. There are trains from Mumbai, Goa, Mangalore, Madras, Trivandrum, Kochi, Kozhikode, and Coimbatore. All major trains going north through the Konkan and beyond stops at Kannur.
By Roadways:
An excellent road transport system connects Kannur to all the major towns of South India. There are frequent bus services from Mangalore, Bangalore, Kochi, Trivandrum and Kozhikode.

Kannur once a premier port of ancient Kerala has been a favorite destination of foreign travelers from Europe, China, and Arab countries. In his book of travels Marco Polo recounts his visit to the area circa 1250 A.D and referred Cannanore as a great Emporia of spice trade.

In the ‘Periplus of the Erithrean Sea’ a Greek work of great antiquity, Kannur finds mention as Naura. Other famous visitors included Fahian, the Buddhist pilgrim, and Ibn Batuta, writer, and historian of Tangiers.
