Aurobindo Ashram

A trip to Pondicerry would be incomplete without a visit to the Aurobindo Ashram or Aurovile.
SRI AUROBINDO ASHRAM Many people associate Pondicherry with the Aurobindo Ashram and visa versa. Sri Aurobindo, the revolutionary turned scholar and poet, and his spiritual partner, The Mother, founded this ashram in the year 1926 and since then this ashram has been an integral part of Pondicherry. The Sri Aurobindo Ashram is situated at the heart of the city, and has grown from a small group to a community. A visit to the samadhi is recommended. You can also stroll around the ashram to observe the daily activities of the ashramites, young and old, and of visiting devotees around the world.
AUROVILLE Founded by The Mother of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in 1968. Aurovile is inhabited by around 1700 people from all over the world. The Aurovilleiets are engaged in a wide range of activities which include education, environmental work, forestry and art and crafts, to mention a few.
At the same time they are making an effort to live up to the Auroville’s ideal of human unity, which is quite clear Auroville’s Charter: ‘Auroville belongs to nobody in particular; Auroville belongs to humanity as a whole. But to live in Auroville one must be the willing servitor of the Divine Consciousness.’
